Gun Safety is one of LWVDV’s top three priorities for 2023-24.  Almost every morning we open our papers or our computers to yet another horror and human tragedy.  I know that many League members have supported further advocacy for gun safety laws locally, as well as for California and our country.

Based on studies by local Leagues across the country, the League of Women Voters US has created policy positions for Gun Safety directing the work of all Leagues in working to bring gun safety to all our communities, including locally.

“The League supports regulating firearms for consumer safety.”

“The League supports licensing procedures for gun ownership by private citizens to include a waiting period for background checks, personal identity verification, guns safety education, and annual license renewal.”

“The League supports strong limitations on access to semi-automatic weapons, enforcement of strict penalties for the improper possession of and crimes committed with handguns and assault weapons, and allocation of resources to better regulate and monitor gun dealers.”

All of you, the members of LWVDV, have voted to make Gun Safety a priority.  I will be organizing an interest group to pursue advocacy and education of gun safety issues in our community and to partner with other organizations with similar goals.  I would like to invite anyone who is interested in participating, or anyone interested in being kept abreast of action, to contact me (Sue Brandy) at sue.b [at] lwvdv.org. I look forward to sharing ideas for how to move forward.
