Hi there LWVDV members!

Here’s a quick update on what’s been happening in your League:
  • We held a great Program Planning session with over 45 attendees and lots of great brainstorming about local, Bay Area and LWVUS priorities for 2022-2024. These priority items will be presented at our Annual Meeting in June for you to vote on. This is a real grassroots effort and we are so pleased to have such a good response! Thanks to all of you who attended and participated so enthusiastically and thoughtfully!
  • Your Board and the committees associated with the Board are working on a number of projects to make our League functioning smoother and easier to manage. We are working on streamlining the process for the development of new committees as well as ways to make the Action Alert process more effective and timely.
  • Candidate forums are being scheduled. Please contact Martha Goralka at voter.services [at] lwvdv.org (subject: Forums)  if you want to help. This is a great way to be a part of local democracy in action.
  • Video is available now of the last Community Conversation, a panel discussion about the efficacy of Measure X. (For more on how the county supports the social safety net, you may want to attend the Budget Justice Coalition's Budget Town Hall from 3-4:30 pm on March 3. LWVDV is a member of the Coalition.) The next Community Conversation will be on March 17th at 4:00 pm on Redistricting
  • The Nominating Committee is in full swing, identifying new officers and directors for the next two-year cycle.  Please contact them if you are interested in exploring a leadership position. It’s actually FUN and an opportunity to work with a great group of fellow Leaguers! See the Nominating Committee's article Ready to Make a Diffference?, or contact Leslie at leslie [at] lwvdv.org (subject: Nominating%20Committee) .

Finally, I’ll share a portion of a blog entry from Virginia Kase Solomón, LWVUS CEO, on what being nonpartisan means within the League:

ISSUES ARE NOT PARTISAN.  The League’s advocacy work is issue-based, and we arrive at our positions based on careful study and input from our members in communities across the country. We never derive our positions from politicians, and even when candidates or parties support the same issue, we never endorse them. Issues may evolve over the years, but our allegiance will always be first and foremost to the voters. If a party changes their position on an issue, that doesn’t mean the League has to change our position to remain neutral. And one politician taking a similar position to the League on any one issue does not make the issue or the League partisan.

Thank you!  It’s been fun serving as your President of Month!

Sincerely,
Janet Hoy
President of the Month
