Our own League member (and BART bond oversight committee member) Catherine Newman is  addressing COVID-19 “hands on”, with her UC Berkeley engineering friends. Funded through GoFundMe, Shield the Bay is manufacturing face shields for Highland Hospital and the Alameda Health System. They have already delivered more than 100 face shields plus 2250 replacement shields.  (Health care workers are using 10 shields each day so the replacements are extremely important tools keeping them safe.) And by the way, a successful project to re-purpose CPAP/BIPAP machines to supplement ventilators has been funded with seed money from UC Berkeley’s Engineering Fund.
