NewsSergio Lopez, of the Contra Costa Immigrant Rights Alliance and the SAFE Center, is looking for more volunteers to assist immigrants with preparation of their asylum forms and to be present in the Immigration Court in Concord to support immigrants going through the asylum process.
Community Asylum Support (CAS):
The assistance with preparing the actual asylum form, known as an I-589, is primarily done by phone with the immigrants who request this service. The program is known as “Community Asylum Support” (CAS) and requires volunteers who are fluent in Spanish and English. Volunteers will be trained in the asylum process.
Welcome Navigators:
To provide support to immigrants in the court room during their hearings, volunteers are preferred who have at least some Spanish language skills. The court volunteers are referred to as “Welcome Navigators.” The Welcome Navigators are present in the courtroom to provide a welcoming presence to the immigrants. The Navigators spend time with the immigrants who are not represented by counsel and offer verbal as well as written information to assist the immigrants who want help finding an attorney and other services. Training videos are available for Welcome Navigators as well as additional in-court training.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jonee Grassi, a Welcome Navigator, and a League member, at 510-681-6021, or email her at joneemg [at] aol.com.
