Los Medanos College celebrated its 50th Anniversary on August 28th. The League was on campus with Perry Peregrine, our friendly puppet, to join in the fun and music. We talked to a lot of students, registered five of them to vote, and shared about VOTE411.org.
National Constitution Day and National Voter Registration Day are both on September 17, 2024 this year. As we honor the U.S. Constitution, it’s a good opportunity to remember that when the U.S. Constitution was written, it did not expressly state that citizens had the right to vote. Nor did the Bill of Rights. So how did this notion of the right to vote become one of the fundamental tenets of our society? How did we come to believe voting is a basic right? Take a few moments to explore these questions by reading about the twists and turns of the 14th and 15th Amendments: Interpretation: The Fifteenth Amendment | Constitution Center.
Here is a fun article about searching for Susan B. Anthony, in recognition of ratification of the 19 Amendment… a nice read to lift the spirits! :-)
