This  year is the 100th Anniversary of the passage of 19th Amendment and the women's right to vote. In this historic year, we want to focus not only on the women in the suffragette movement here and in Britain, but on many other women who broke barriers. During July and August, the Public Programs Committee is inviting League members to watch PBS films about the vote and join us afterwards for "Sips & Conversations" to discuss the films.

American Experience – The Vote

Our first film "American Experience: The Vote" airs on PBS on Monday, July 6 & Tuesday July 7 at 9 pm. You can also stream it on PBS. On Wednesday, July 8 at 7:00 pm via Zoom we will host our "Sips & Conversation".  Eventbrite invites have been sent out to League members.

Suffragettes: How Women Really Won the Vote

On Sunday, July 12 at 9 pm, PBS will air "Suffragettes: How Women Really Won the Vote.”

"Sips and Conversation" will follow on Wednesday, July 15th via Zoom at 7:00 p.m.  Members will be sent an Eventbrite invitation and your RSVP will generate your invitation to Zoom with us on "Sips and Conversation".

2018 marked 100 years since the first women over the age of 30, who owned property, were allowed to vote in the UK. But the fight for the vote was about more than the Pankhurst family or Emily Davison's fateful collision with the king's horse. In this dramatized documentary, popular historian Lucy Worsley tells the story of a group of less well known, but equally astonishing, young working-class suffragettes who decided to go against every rule and expectation that Edwardian society had about them. Lucy and her group of suffragettes from the Women's Social Political Union reveal how women got the vote through their brave, trailblazing and often dangerous activities. Lucy looks at the role of politics, police and parliament in the partial enfranchisement of women in 1918, followed by the coalition of groups who successfully achieved the vote for all women over 21 some ten years later.

Unsung Women Who Changed America

Want to be a bit subversive while celebrating the woman’s suffrage movement? Join us in viewing a collection of film shorts about diverse “Unsung Women Who Changed America” which is currently being streamed on PBS’s online program, UnladyLike2020. This special program is in celebration of the bold courageous, creative women not often highlighted in our history. While some are not suffragists, they all are trailblazers in their own right breaking through society’s limitations. Your registration will generate your invitation to Zoom with us on "Sips and Conversation".
