Today's public debates about the scope of presidential power echo debates from the birth of our nation. In recognition of Constitution Day, two eminent scholars will engage in a moderated discussion about perennial questions:
- How should we balance the need for effective leadership with the need to prevent abuse of power?
- Have we achieved that balance?
- What would the founders think about the powers of the modern presidency?
The panelists are:
- Vikram Amar, Professor of Law, UC Davis
- Dan Farber, Professor of Law, UC Berkeley
Barbara McGraw, SMC Professor of the Year 2025-26 and authority on civil rights. will moderate.

Community Conversations are co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Diablo Valley, the League of Women Voters of West Contra Costa County, CCTV, and the Contra Costa County Library.
