Fight Truth Decay! Combat Disinformation

As election season heats up, it’s more vital than ever that the voting public be well informed.  This begins with helping voters to distinguish between legitimate news and disinformation.

Coast’s “Disinformation Team” has published periodic articles on our website with tips and tests to help us all sharpen our skills.

Our team also has developed a 30-minute PowerPoint presentation that shows how to distinguish between misinformation (unintended, yet inaccurate content) and disinformation (deliberately false information, intended to mislead).

Our presentation identifies news sources and shows why online sites are especially troublesome, reflected in a recent quote from NewsGuard, “About one in five videos automatically suggested on TikTok contains misinformation.”   Another study reported similar findings about misleading images on Facebook.

We offer suggestions for how to PRACTICE NEWS HYGIENE.  We also provide a helpful list of online resources for combatting disinformation.

Help us spread the word!

We’re eager to make our presentation to groups beyond Coast League.  We encourage you to reach out to your other groups — churches, civic organizations, social clubs — that would be interested in hearing how to FIGHT TRUTH DECAY.   Please note that the presentation can be made via zoom or in person.
