The League of Women Voters of New Castle County (LWVNCC) President Marjorie Johnson's message for April 2021 is included below...

I sincerely hope that many of you were able to join the five very informative League Day presentations, and if you weren’t, I hope you will access them on our website or Facebook page. There was so much good information in each of them, some of which you will want to take action on.

Several League members under the leadership of Pat Todd have been running the elections this month within the Wilmington Housing Authority apartment buildings, for leadership and the running of those communities. Pat has been doing this for years, in cooperation with the Housing Authority to provide safe and reliable elections. One more thing that the LWVNCC does! Many thanks to Pat.

Thanks to Kim Wells and her team, the League study on Alternative Voting Methods has been completed and there will be several options to tune into presentations on the recommendations this month. Look for them elsewhere in this [April 2021 LWVNCC VOTER newsletter].

There will also be two presentations this month on Redistricting in which many of you will surely want to become involved. Look for them elsewhere in this [April 2021 LWVNCC VOTER] also.

It has now been one year since everything shut down because of the pandemic. Who knew, at the time, how long it would be, or how isolated we would become. Yet, despite it all, and with thanks to technology, we have remained connected, busy at the work of the League, and a force for education, voter reform, and a defense of democracy wherever and however it is challenged. On a positive note, I just read the 2021 World Happiness Report (who knew there was such a thing!) which revealed that despite increased anxiety and depression during this pandemic, optimism for the future is strong and an adaptation to new situations and a resilience that surprised even the researchers. That is not to say people aren’t still struggling, and the work of relief and support isn’t still needed for equity in all areas. This time has revealed several areas of injustice which are being addressed by the work of the League with resilience and optimism even in the face of opposition.

The work goes on. Join in.
