The League of Women Voters of New Castle County (LWVNCC) President Richard Johnson's message for January 2023 is included below...
I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year for 2023.
At the start of this New Year, I thought it would be a good idea to focus on who is the League of Women Voters and what is its mission. People repeatedly ask this question when we are attending voter registration and other events. The question is often asked what does your organization do? The members of the Board of the LWVNCC decided we needed a 30 second elevator pitch, so here it is.
“Democracy is threatened around the world which is evident in America today. The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit dedicated to empowering everyone to fully participate in our democracy. We engage in advocacy, education, litigation, and organizing to protect every American’s freedom to vote. The League has expanded our vision of a more inclusive democracy where all Americans, regardless of gender, sex, race, ability, or party can see themselves represented in our government.”
If you believe our democracy is threatened and that you can help make a difference, I encourage you to consider joining the League. If you are already a member I ask you to step up and volunteer for a couple of events or attend some of our social events to meet and talk with our current members. If you are wondering what’s in it for me? Through participation in League projects, you will:
- contribute valuable service to the community
- gain knowledge and experience through the study and discussion of timely and important topics
- discover new interests, develop new skills and learn about crucial issues in your community
- make professional contacts and develop lasting friendships as you meet others in League who share your interests
