The League of Women Voters of New Castle County is proud to announce a planned academic scholarship in the name of Joann Hasse, a longtime League member and advocate who died in the spring of 2023. Hasse served as League President at both the New Castle County and State level for multiple terms over the years, and was honored by the Delaware State General Assembly for her advocacy work. Joann was a friend and mentor to many of us and will be sorely missed.

The Joann D. Hasse Memorial Scholarship is planned as a $2,500 annual merit-based sum awarded to a Delaware college student or high school senior who provides a winning one-page essay on "Citizenship." Application will be open to any student pursuing an undergraduate college degree in Delaware. The first award will be for the 2024-25 academic year and the application will be made available via the LWVNCC website at https://my.lwv.org/delaware/new-castle-county or via the guidance offices at Delaware high schools starting in September or October 2023.

A lifelong learner, Joann often mentioned that she attended "the university of LWV" — crediting her League of Women Voters involvement with sparking her extensive self-education regarding social issues and government. A retired nursing professional, Joann served as Chair of the Health Care Portfolio for the League of Women Voters of Delaware Advocacy Corps for many years.

Fundraising is currently underway to support the new Joann D. Hasse Memorial Scholarship, and donations are actively being taken at this time.
