The LWVNCC Board is excited to announce the appointment of two additional directors (beyond the seven elected at the annual meeting) to round out the Board: long-term member Joann Hasse and brand-new member Shaniya Lewis.

Board President Marj's Johnson asked Joann Hasse if she would to continue on the Board to provide us with her League expertise, and we are very glad to say that Joann accepted! Her one-year appointment as a director for LWVNCC was approved by the Board in July 2019. Joann is just coming off a two-year stint as state League President, and serves as the Chair of the Health Care portfolio for the state Advocacy Corps.

Shaniya Lewis is a student at William Penn High School who joined the League this summer. After meeting her at the September board meeting, the LWVNCC Board appointed Shaniya Lewis to a one year term as a director on the Board. She is an amazing young woman and we look forward to working with her.

Shaniya says...

My name is Shaniya Lewis. I am a senior at William Penn High School with hopes of going to college to study Psychology. My hope is to help others that may be in situations that are out of their control. Being an African American Woman in America, this is something that I know all too well. As of right now I do what I can to help others around me. I joined 4H Health Rocks, which helps teach children the negative effects of tobacco, drugs, alcohol, peer pressure and things of that nature. I am the President of the Greater Newark Area Youth Council and a member of the Newark NAACP Executive Committee, and was recently accepted into Network Delaware’s Ella Baker Program focusing on shaping African American leaders. I take pride in being a part of all of these organizations and wish to change the way of life for people of color. I do this not only for myself but for my family, my friends, and for those that struggle in their everyday lives just to exist. I hope that by serving on the Board of the League of Women Voters of New Castle County, I can strengthen my knowledge and skill set to be able to accomplish my hopes and dreams for the future!
