The League of Women Voters of New Castle County (LWVNCC) President Richard Johnson's message for March 2022 is included below...

The League of Women Voters of New Castle County is fortunate to have 196 members, and we love our members. We would like to have more active members who are involved in some of our committees. Right now, we have openings on our board and one key position is for Treasurer. If you or anyone you know is interested in serving for a two-year term, please let Letty Diswood know.

Being more involved has some key benefits. One of the more well-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of others and the League as an organization. Volunteering is a two-way street: It can benefit you and your family as much as the cause you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a volunteer enables you to make new friends, expands your network, and boosts your social skills.

Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health. It can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. While it’s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you’ll experience, volunteering doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day. Giving in even the simplest way can help those in need and improve your health and happiness.

We need your help in becoming a more active member. Consider becoming an active member of our committees and help us with ideas to expand our reach to others and make an impact in your community and our state. Reach out to one of these committee leaders and volunteer to work with them.

It is a known fact that volunteering makes you happy. By measuring hormones and brain activity, researchers have discovered that being helpful to others delivers immense pleasure. Human beings are hard-wired to give to others. The more we give, the happier we feel.

We are looking for people like you! Please reach out to us. The time you spend will be focused on helping the community and at the same time contributing to your own happiness.
