October Topic - Fighting Hate
Though we are in a new presidential administration and a new year that was believed to be filled with promise, divisiveness still continues. It is easy to think that many of us encounter challenging comments or conversations on a regular basis. Whether it is the ‘interesting’ uncle at a family reunion, a dinner conversation with a loved one, or someone we meet on the street, it is not always easy to know how to respond. We are currently living in a call-out or cancel culture. We are wanting people to be held accountable for what they are saying. So, we ‘call’ them out. But what if we were to call them IN. Activist and scholar Loretta J. Ross, offers a different strategy, in her TED Talk, "Don’t Call People Out – Call Them In." In her presentation, Ms. Ross provides an approach that helps to challenge a statement that is not in keeping with what we believe and still open the door for growth, forgiveness, and a better understanding. As Ms. Ross puts it:
Fighting hate should be fun, it's being a hater that sucks.
Our presenter for this month is, Loretta J. Ross. She is a professor at Smith College where she teaches activism as a clinical professor. Ms. Ross educates people on how to counter the call-out culture with the ‘Call In’ strategy in schools, businesses, and relationships. She began her career in the 1970’s as a human rights activist, working for social change.
