March Topic - “The Moral Roots of Liberals and Conservatives” By Jonathan Haidt
At the last TED Talk a gauntlet was tossed down. The challenge was to find a TED Talk that we would disagree with. The gauntlet was picked up to result in a two-part TED Talk, though it may not be the hugely controversial discussion envisioned when the challenge was offered. The first part is a TED Talk presented by Jonathan Haidt, entitled “The Moral Roots of Liberals and Conservatives”. Mr. Haidt studies the how and why we have evolved to be the moral and political people we are today. He links the morals and political positions to the five moral values that form our political choices, and life choices for that matter. In his eye-opening presentation, Mr. Haidt, “pinpoints the moral values that liberals and conservatives tend to honor most.” Hence, the potential controversial conversation.
Jonathan Haidt is a social psychologist whose research focus is on morality across cultures. Mr. Haidt has authored articles for the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He has been named as one of the top global thinkers by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines.
