January Topic - What If We Replaced Politicians with Randomly Selected People?

2024 is going to be an action-packed year, with busy get out the vote activities, candidate debates, the primary and local elections, and then the general election itself. But what if… “What If We Replaced Politicians With Randomly Selected People?.” Brett Hennig, our TEDx presenter for January, poses this question as a solution to a democracy that is viewed in various stages of disarray and brokenness. Mr. Hennig presents a compelling case for a different approach. A system that is rooted in ancient Athens that uses the wisdom of the crown and “entrusts ordinary people with making balanced decisions.” Decisions that are for the greater good of everyone and not a select few.

As an author and activist, Brett Hennig campaigns to build support for his idea of stratified, random selection or sortition in governments. Join us for this discussion of this newer and provocative way of selecting people to run our governments. Zoom in to learn more about how it could work to move the United States forward to a place that is free from partisan politics.

The conversation begins with a joint virtual viewing of the TED Talk at 10:00 am via Zoom web conference. Pre-register for this sparky conversation using the link provided above.
