Update: due to a candidate withdrawal on 3/26, there are no more contested seats for Newark City Council, and the City of Newark election scheduled for April 13, 2021 has been canceled.
2021 City Election for Newark, DE
There will be an election on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 for Newark City council. Districts 1, 2 and 4 have open seats.In Districts 1 and 4, only one candidate filed for office, so no election will take place in those districts. Only District 2 will have an actual election in 2021. A map of city election disticts can be found here at Newark's arcgis maps page.
Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m on April 13th. The physical polling place for this election is as follows:
- District 2 - Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Station #8, 410 Ogletown Road
However, the City of Newark strongly encourages City residents to vote via absentee ballot for the April 13, 2021 Council election due to COVID-19 considerations. Absentee ballot affidavits and a cover letter detailing instructions will be mailed to every registered voter in districts with an election after the February 8, 2021 filing deadline. The final deadline for returning completed affidavits is Friday, April 9, 2021. All completed absentee ballots must be returned to the City Secretary’s Office no later than 8:00 p.m. the day of the election.
City residents (within the corporate limits of the City of Newark) who are at least 18 years old and are registered to vote with the State of Delaware are eligible to vote in this election. You may register to vote through the State Department of Elections online voter portal, ivote.de.gov.
