October Topic - How to Win an Argument

At first glance, this TED Talk... How to win an argument (at the US Supreme Court, or anywhere) by Neal Katyal... was thought to be of interest mainly to the members involved in the advocacy corps. However, as the talk preview unfolded it was quick to see that it is relevant to all LWV members and guests, in that Mr. Katyal’s message speaks to the basic premise of the League of Women Voters. Mr. Katyal notes that:

successful argument lies in human connection, empathy and faith in the power of your ideas.

It was our founding mothers’ who had the faith in their ideas for the right for all women to be able to vote that allowed them to succeed in their argument. Though Mr. Katyal prompts that it is not necessarily about winning every argument but rather; “how to get back up when you do lose."

Mr. Neal Katyal is the former Acting Solicitor General of the United States. He is currently serving as a Special Prosecutor in the George Floyd murder cases.

Join us virtually on October 17, 2020 at 10:00 am for an encouraging discussion on an approach to how we can structure our conversations to get our ideas and points across to others.
