March Topic

The TED Talk for March returns to a focus on the issues that are currently being reviewed in the Delaware Legislature. The talk for this month is: “Why Lakes and Rivers Should Have the Same Rights as Humans.” This talk is a little funky but packs a powerful punch. Presenter, Dr. Kelsey Leonard offers a different view of our water ways. She is suggesting that we give our water ways the same legal rights that we have as humans. Dr. Leonard strives to fundamentally transform how you look at water. Prompts for thinking about water in the talk are:

• Who is water?
• Poisoning water is terrorism
• How do we value water?
• Water is alive
• What are we/you/I going to do about water quality?

Presenter Dr. Kelsey Leonard is a water scholar and protector as well as a as an Indigenous legal scholar and scientist is working to establish the Indigenous traditions of water conservation. Dr. Leonard sets a foundation for water policymaking in terms of giving legal rights to water. As a representative of the Shinnecock Indian Nation, Dr. Leonard represents the Shinnecock Indian Nation, on the Mid-Atlantic Committee on the Ocean. This organization is charged with protecting America's ocean ecosystems and coastlines.

Dr. Leonard has recently received a scholarship to explore Indigenous water justice and the defining international legal principle of self-determination. This project is under the auspices of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Join us at our LWVNCC TED viewings to engage in genuine small-group dialogue on important societal issues. Mark this on your calendar - recurring from 1 to 3 pm on the third Saturday of each month.
