On July 29, the Florida Department of Education proposed a change to the rule that governs the charter school conversion ballot process to make it easier to convert public schools to charter schools.
They are proposing that only 50% of teachers “employed at the school” (and not all teachers meet the eligibility criteria for who is defined as a “teacher”) and only 50% of parents voting must show support for conversion to a charter school. The current threshold is a "majority."
This rule change would impact all Floridians. This conversion process is not limited to failing schools or ones that are in danger of closing. All Florida public schools would be subject to this change.
Now that the proposed rule has been posted, it is open for public comment until Aug. 19. Make sure your voice is heard!
