Your Action is Needed Now:
Dangerous legislation to rollback common sense gun laws is on the move...
The Florida House will hear and vote upon House Bill 1223 and House Bill 17 in the coming days.
- House Bill 1223 will be heard on the floor of the Florida House on Thursday, February 29th. This bill would lower the age from 21 to 18 to buy long guns, like AR-15s, undoing the good that was done in the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) Act. Semi-automatic, long guns are the weapons of choice for mass shooters. The shooter who used an AR-15 to murder 17 people and injure 17 others at the MSD High School in Parkland was only 19-years old. There is no good reason for reducing the age to 18 to own such a weapon of war.
- House Bill 17 will be heard on the floor of the Florida House on Friday, March 1 Currently there is a three day waiting period when purchasing a gun from a federally licensed dealer. During that time a background check is run. However, this bill would go ahead and allow the buyer to acquire the firearm if the check is not completed in three days. What if the check later comes back disqualifying the buyer from getting the gun? Too late!
Since the actions taken after the Parkland shooting, legislators have actively worked to weaken Florida’s gun laws and recently repealed the requirement that a person obtain a permit to carry a concealed firearm in public. In an average year over 2,800 people are killed by guns in Florida, and over 5,200 more are shot and wounded. Gun violence costs Florida $40.3 billion each year, of which $875.9 million is paid by taxpayers. Stopping both of these bills is critical to the safety of Floridians and tourists.
We're urging Florida League members to their respective Representative to oppose these bills!
Tell your state Representative to vote NO on HB 1223 & HB 17!
