LWVAC is launching a "What You Can Do" (WYCD) campaign where we share a series of action plans. With so much happening on the national stage, these action plans are intended to encourage you to respond to the daily breach of the rule of law and the separation of powers. CURRENT TOPIC: The use of Signal by top national security officials

On March 24, The Atlantic broke the story that U.S. national-security leaders included a journalist in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. Some legislators are downplaying the high-level security text chain. Louisianna Senator John Kennedy said “I don’t think most Americans care one way or another.”

CURRENT ACTION: Call your legislators* and tell them you care that our military and security leadership has bungled sensitive military communications

Suggested questions:

  1. Senator/Representative (name) what are you doing about the situation in which top national security and defense officials were using a commercial app, Signal, to communicate information about an attack on Houthi targets?
  2. The information could have put our troops in jeopardy. What are you doing to ensure that secure channels will be used for national security in the future? What are you doing to protect our troops?
  3. Are you going to call for the resignation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for inexcusable breach of national security? Are you going to call for the resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Waltz?

*National leaders to call:

Senator Rick Scott: (202) 224-5274
Senator Ashley Moody: (202) 224-3041
Representative Kat Cammack: (202) 225-5744
