The following letter is from John Wachtel, Neighborhood Planning Coordinator for the City of Gainesville Housing & Community Development Department.

Each year, the City receives funds from the State of Florida’s State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) Program (For additional information about Florida’s SHIP Program, click on the following link:

SHIP - State Housing Initiatives Partnership Program (floridahousing.org)). The City uses SHIP funds for several affordable housing programs (including Home Repair, First Time Home Buyer Down Payment Assistance, and others) for income-qualified households.

The State of Florida requires Cities and Counties that receive SHIP Program funds to form an Affordable Housing Advisory Committee (AHAC).  For Gainesville, the AHAC consists of City residents who have volunteered to serve, and been appointed by the City Commission. All AHAC meetings are open to the public. The most important task of the AHAC is to develop an Incentives and Recommendations Report (IRR) that examines the regulations, fees, policies and procedures that impact the costs of developing housing within the City. In addition, the IRR contains AHAC’s recommendations to increase access to affordable housing.

After developing and discussing the IRR all year, the AHAC is scheduled to adopt the IRR at a Public Hearing on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 6:00 p.m., at the Historic Thomas Center, Building B, Room 201, 306 NE 6th Avenue. The agenda and backup for this meeting can be accessed by clicking on the following link and choosing the appropriate date for the SHIP-Affordable Housing Advisory Committee: New: Agendas & Minutes Welcome to the City of Gainesville (gainesvillefl.gov). In addition and for your convenience, the agenda and backup for the November 14th meeting is attached to this email as a PDF. If you have any comments about the IRR, please send them to John Wachtel at wachteljs [at] gainesvillefl.gov.

Please forward this email and the attachment to anyone else that you think might be interested in the IRR.
