Join the League of Women Voters of Concord-Carlisle and Umbrella Arts for a screening of the PBS Great Performances recording of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Suffs — and get ready to vote this November.
Suffs is an award-winning Broadway musical created by Shaina Taub that chronicles the intense, decade-long push for the 19th Amendment and the brilliant, passionate, and funny American women who fought tirelessly for the right to vote. Taub, the first woman to independently win Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score in the same season, created a “thrilling, inspiring and dazzlingly entertaining” (Variety) musical that boldly explores the triumphs and failures of a struggle for equality that’s far from over. Suffs also won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best New Musical.
The League has a special connection to the story: League of Women Voters founder Carrie Chapman Catt is among the historical figures portrayed in Suffs, alongside Alice Paul, Ida B. Wells, Mary Church Terrell, and other leaders of the suffrage movement.
Come at 6:30 PM to mingle and make sure you’re ready for the November election. League volunteers will be available with voter registration information and election information.
The screening begins at 7:00 PM. The PBS recording runs approximately 2 hours and 14 minutes, with one intermission.
The Umbrella will have concessions available for purchase, including wine, beer, non-alcoholic drinks, and snacks.
