The League of Women Voters is a grassroots organization, which means our advocacy starts with our members. Each year, LWVCC members help decide where we focus our efforts through a process called Program Planning. This ensures that the League’s work reflects the needs and priorities of our local community.
How We Choose Our Priorities
Every year, LWVCC members propose issues they believe deserve League attention—whether through study, public education, or advocacy. The Board considers these proposals and recommends a program of focus areas for the year ahead. Final decisions are made by the membership at our Annual Meeting in the spring.
This process helps us:
- Stay grounded in our mission and positions
- Focus our efforts where they’re most needed
- Encourage broad member participation
Program Planning also feeds into the biennial planning processes at the state and national levels, where local Leagues influence broader League priorities.
How We Advocate
The League takes action on issues for which we have adopted positions, developed through careful study and member consensus. Once a position is established, we may act in a variety of ways, such as:
- Organizing informational events or forums
- Writing letters to local officials or the press
- Making public statements or testifying at public meetings
- Supporting or opposing ballot initiatives or legislation
- Partnering with community groups to amplify impact
We do this while maintaining our nonpartisan stance: the League never supports or opposes political candidates or parties.
Advocacy is a powerful expression of our mission to build a more informed and engaged democracy—and it’s open to all our members.
