Who Are the Members?
We are an inclusive group and we value and encourage membership that is diverse in its identities, ideas, and political persuasions. Membership in the League of Women Voters, the most respected and effective nonpartisan grassroots organization in the country, is open to all genders, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Our members make a visible difference by serving as community leaders using their experience to create positive, lasting change in our communities. League members come from all backgrounds. Members are legislators, educators, civil servants, corporate employees, retirees, students, parents, activists…the list continues.
Why Should I Join?
- You will contribute a valuable service to the community.
- You will discover new interest, develop new skills, and learn about crucial issues in the community.
- You will make professional contacts and develop lasting friendships as you meet others in the League who share a passion for good governance and action as a duty of citizenship.
How Much Time Does it Take?
It’s up to you! Many members choose to support the League only with their annual dues. Your membership alone gives us the political influence needed to build a voice for citizens and a force for change. We cover a broad spectrum of issues, interests, and concerns; you may choose to become active in as many as you like by participating in a study group, a committee, or listening to experts at a meeting, or even just by reading about them in one of our publications.
What Do League Members Do?
Members get information and alerts about issues to contact elected officials. At monthly geographically situated membership unit meetings (City, West County, Webster/Kirkwood, North County, St. Charles, Office/Hybrid), members discuss public policy issues at all three levels. All members are encouraged to attend our three membership meetings where a speaker informs us on an issue of importance, we conduct organization business, and we take time to meet and enjoy each other’s company. We hold fundraisers which provide a strengthened community and help raise critical funds to conduct our important work.
We have many active committees which rely upon the helping hands of involved volunteers.
Administrative
Office volunteers answer phones, often providing voting and election-related issues answers for the public, which relies on our expertise in all things democracy. They also help prepare the materials for our committees as they work in the community. Volunteers organize the location, speaker, and refreshments for our all-member meetings three times a year.
Our membership committee helps new members advance through the process of membership, welcomes new members, and helps direct everyone to activities and interests they may choose.
Finance, Budget and Fund Raising
Our finance committee helps prepare our budget and oversees our investments. Our fundraisers are volunteer-run and are the perfect way to put those well-honed fundraising experiences you have undoubtedly earned in schools, churches, and organizations. Trivia Night is a perennial favorite and we have held theatre nights and concerts in collaboration with sponsoring organizations in the past.
Communications
We rely on members with writing, editing, and design skills to produce our social media posts, some blogs or web page copy, and our printed publications. Volunteers send out text reminders to voters before elections.
The Get Out the Vote Committee which brainstorms and delivers voting issues and motivates voters throughout the year. Materials are created for tabling events in the community. Thousands of post cards are mailed to targeted voters. Media strategy is created and implemented. Neighborhood canvassing sends our volunteers to targeted neighborhoods to educate voters on issues and encourage going to the polls.
Our Speakers Bureau presents at area businesses, nursing homes, schools, and community groups. Various topics are prepared, with Voting Basics, Local Government, Schools and School Boards, and the History of Suffrage among the most popular.
Voter Services
Perhaps the most visible in the community are our Voter Services volunteers. During the last year we conducted more than 300 voter registration events, held more than 30 candidate and issues forums, and we researched candidates, wrote, and edited our Voters Guide and Vote411 online guide. We delivered nearly 15,000 copies of the Voters Guide, printed in collaboration with the St. Louis Post Dispatch, to nearly 160 locations. Our trained volunteers registered nearly 4,000 new voters at 160 registration drives at new citizen naturalization ceremonies, at high schools, colleges and trade schools, and at community events. We held a statewide webinar on voting basics for voters with disabilities and we took a team of our high school civics education members to school board candidate forums where they presented questions they solicited and collected from students in those districts.
