The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) has yet to become part of the US Constitution - but we are almost there! Action needed now to contact Montana's Senators and urge them to support and move SJR 6 forward!
The LWV Montana is launching a campaign using the Lady Liberty ERA It's Time image from above to print postcards to to contact our Senators. The Coronavirus pandemic disproportionately affects women. The vast majority of those on the front lines are women, including 75% of hospital workers, 88% of psychiatric, nursing and home-health aids, 66% of cashiers and retail salespeople in grocery stores, and 63% of fast food and counter workers.
Yet despite laws that forbid discrimination in Montana, women make about 73 cents for every dollar men make for equal work. In the battle against Covid 19, women are risking their lives every day while being valued as three quarters of a man.
The remedy for this discrimination has been in the works for almost 100 years: the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the US Constitution. We are close to finishing this fight. Virginia ratified the ERA in January 2020, becoming the 38th and final state needed to adopt this amendment.
In February the US House of Representatives eliminated the deadline for state ratification of the ERA and now the Senate must do the same. Montana Senator Tester co-sponsored Senate Joint Resolution 6 eliminating the ERA ratification deadline. The League of Women Voters calls upon Montana Senator Daines to do the same! Contact our Senators and add your voice for the ERA!
