The League of Women Voters of New Castle County invites you to its monthly TED Talk Discussion, Saturday March 16th at 1 pm. The format is to watch the TED Talk and then discuss the "Ideas Worth Sharing." Bring your own beverage and snack if desired. Contact Kay Palmer with questions or to RSVP.

This month’s TED Talk builds on the Hot Topic Lunch presentation in February on “Why Smart Justice for Delaware?” by ACLU-DE executive director, Kathleen MacRae. In the presentation, Ms. MacRae provided a view of the current situation in our Delaware prison system. As described in the presentation, our Delaware corrections system is behind in the new approaches that are being taken to improve the corrections system. This is supported by the court cases surrounding the prison uprising at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna that is in part blamed on chronic staffing shortages and other poor treatment.

In this month's TED Talk, “How Prisons Can Help Inmates Live Meaningful Lives,” Dan Pacholke, Deputy Secretary for the Washington State Department of Corrections, shares a vision of prisons that provide humane living conditions as well as opportunities for meaningful work and learning. Mr. Pacholke urges rethinking the design of prisons, the training of officers and the education opportunities made available to inmates. Ideas that are worth spreading to our Delaware leadership.
