The SAVE Act adds unnecessary barriers to voter registration by requiring citizenship documentation—despite existing safeguards. This Presidents' Day, then, let us truly reflect on the role and power of America’s chief executive. At the helm of our nation, we deserve leadership grounded in integrity, guided by constitutional responsibility, and committed to the safety and well-being of every person who calls this country home.

In this new year, 2026, Americans across the country will commemorate the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. We certainly have much to celebrate. But as we join in the festivities this year, we also should recognize the many challenges facing America today. These include deep political and social divisions, widening income inequality, and public skepticism as to whether government can work for everyday people. Are there ways we can strengthen our democracy so it can be resilient in the years ahead?

Reflecting on this tragic day in 2024, League President Dianna Wynn and I noted that January 6 was a reminder of “the sacredness of preserving democracy.” As we look ahead to a critical year for elections and advocacy, this reminder guides my every move.
