November Topic - Why Teens Confess

House Bill 360: An act to amend Title 11 of the Delaware code relating to electronic recordation of custodial interrogations of children was instroduced in the Delaware legislature in June of 2020, but did not make it out of the Judiciary Committee in the COVID-shortened session. The bill would have required that custodial interrogation of children while in a place of detention, by a law enforcement officer, be electronically recorded.

The TED Talk for November, Why Teens Confess to Crimes They Didn’t Commit, considers the conduct of this type of interrogation. Dr. Lindsay Malloy focuses on the situations in which juveniles falsely confess to crimes during their interrogations. In this TED Talk, Dr, Malloy looks specifically at the science that is behind the false confessions.

More importantly she creates a call to action for changes in the way kids are being treated in legal systems. As we heard in the October Hot Topics presentation on the Delaware debtors prison system, we learned that the Delaware legal system is poorly designed for adults and even more egregious for children.

Dr. Lindsay Malloy is a developmental psychology professor and researcher. Her primary focus is on improving justice for vulnerable youth. This work includes working to develop more appropriate interrogation methods and investigative interviewing techniques for children and teens.

Join us virtually on November 21, 2020 at 10:00 am for an encouraging discussion on an approach to how we can structure our conversations to get our ideas and points across to others.
