The League of Women Voters of Delaware presents League Days 2021, a series of web conferences on important legislative topics chosen by our Advocacy Corps portfolio chairs.
Overview
There are four dates in March. All are welcome! The League encourages you to sign up for as many or as few as interest you:
- Wednesday March 10, 2021 01:30 PM – Education Equity. Register for Mar 10 session
- Wednesday March 17, 2021 10:00 AM – Elections / Voting. Register for Mar 17 session
- Wednesday March 24, 2021 10:00 AM – OffShore Wind Power. Register for Mar 24 session
- Wednesday March 31, 2021 10:00 AM – Court Fines & Fees. Register for Mar 31 session
An additional session will be held in late April on the legislative redistricting process, presented by our FairMaps portfolio team.
Session Details
March 10 - Education Perspectives and Intersections
Four Delaware leaders will be guest panelists in a lively conversation for League Days 2021 sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Delaware on Wednesday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.
Dan Rich, University Professor of Public Policy, University of Delaware; Dr. Sandi Hagans-Morris, Education Director at First State Community Action Agency; Ed Ratledge, Director of the UD Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research; and Bill Collick, Legendary Coach and Member of the Cape Henlopen School Board, will discuss “Education Perspectives and Intersections – Policy Reforms, the Education Equity Lawsuit Settlement, and Boots on the Ground” with Moderator Kathleen Baker of the League's Education team. League members and the public are invited, and comments and questions will be welcomed. The session concludes at 3:00 p.m.
The General Assembly is now considering legislation for Opportunity Funding and other supports for children as a result of the recent Education Equity Lawsuit Settlement. This session is part of LWV's work to encourage public inquiry and discussion about the future of Pre-K-12 public education in Delaware.
March 17 - Elections & Voting
Delaware's election experts will discuss the 2020 elections, providing insight into some of the challenges and successes. We will also review upcoming voting bills in Delaware and how you can help. With Delaware Election Commissioner Anthony Albence, Dwayne Bensing of ACLU-DE, and LWVDE Elections Committee Chair Jill Itzkowitz.
March 24 - Offshore Wind Power
This session will be a panel discussion with three experts in the field:
- Willett Kempton, Professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, and in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, at the University of Delaware
- Kris Ohleth, Executive Director at Special Initiative on Offshore Wind
- Dr. David Bidwell, Associate Professor of Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island
The discussion will be moderated by LWVNCC Vice President Richard Johnson.
March 31 - Court Fines and Fees
Learn about what new legislative efforts can do for Delaware and the Campaign to End Debtors' Prison. With panelists Lynne Kielhorn and Meryem Dede from the Campaign to End Debtors' Prison in Delaware and Dr. Tanya N. Whittle, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Delaware State University.
