Declaration of Support for the Montana Constitution

Fifty years ago in 1972, 100 citizen/delegates (none could be current officeholders) crafted a new Constitution for Montana. Though elected with party designation, they sat together in Convention alphabetically in a nonpartisan effort to come up with what was best for the state and its citizens after 83 years of corporate dominance under the “Copper Collar.” All 100 delegates signed the resulting State Constitution, considered the best in the nation, making Montanans the most entitled and protected citizens in America, with many more rights than found in the U.S. Constitution, among which are:

  • The right-to-know what their government is doing, including open meeting and public record requirements
  • The strongest right of personal privacy anywhere
  • A unique right to individual dignity with freedom from public and private discrimination
  • The right to a clean and healthful environment and a commitment to work toward that
  • A unique Constitutional right to participate in government decisions before action is completed including open, noticed meetings
  • A right to keep and bear arms stronger than the U.S. Constitution
  • A right to vote stronger than the U.S. Constitution
  • The requirement for a balanced state budget
  • A protection of your hunting & fishing heritage
  • The public recording of all legislative votes
  • An independent non-partisan judiciary

  • An independent redistricting commission
  • A right of access to Montana’s public lands
