Laura Davis from Mothers Out Front will present and lead attendees through a discussion about how Inequitable Climate Change Impacts our Community.
Climate change affects us all, but its impacts are far from equitable. Communities of color, Indigenous Peoples, and low-income groups face disproportionate harm from extreme weather events like heat waves, hurricanes, and flooding. This inequity is exacerbated by the concentration of toxic fossil fuel infrastructure—such as power plants and refineries—in many of these same communities. This talk will address the urgent need for an intersectional approach to greenhouse gas reduction, highlighting how citizens organizing systemic change can drive a more just and effective climate response. Drawing on the work of Mothers Out Front in Massachusetts and beyond, the presentation will demonstrate how campaigns that challenge and transform unjust systems can not only safeguard our future but also foster a healthier and fairer world today.
Questons to be explored:
- What is climate justice? And what does it mean to take a justice-oriented approach to addressing climate change?
- What are intersectional climate campaigns? Especially on housing, transportation, and air quality.
- What is Concord's role in the fight for climate justice?
We will also be discussing ideas for a WE ARE CONCORD initiative.
About the Social Justice Roundtable: The Concord Social Justice Roundtable has been created as a forum for various groups and individuals who share the common goal of helping Concord become a more welcoming, equitable, and inclusive community. It is hoped that this roundtable will allow participants to share learning, ideas, and strategies in the work at hand and provide opportunities for synergy and collaboration.
