Help Needed on Constitution Day, September 17
September 17th is National Constitution Day. LWV Diablo Valley will be at Diablo Valley College to do voter registration from 12:30-3:00.  Los Medanos College (LMC) will also need volunteers for voter registration. The time for LMC will be approximately 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. This will be confirmed soon. If you can give a bit of time to help at one of these locations, be sure to let Ana Pan or Shawn Gilbert know.  Voter.services [at] lwvdv.org

Out and About in the Community

Partnering with the Contra Costa Library for its Summer Exploration Stations was successful and a lot of fun.  A big THANK YOU to Joanne Supersad, Nancy Petsuch, Martha Goralka, Ana Pan, Genoveva Calloway of LWV West Contra Costa County, Karlina Meyer, Langston Aiken and Shawn Gilbert for bringing their smiles and friendliness to the youngest members of our community.  The children truly enjoyed meeting Bertie the Western Burrowing Owl, and Barkley, the giant fluffy dog, who talked to them about voting.  We also thank Amy Mockoski, Librarian III-Youth Services, for her amazing work in bringing so many community groups together to share fun and information with the children and their families. Those organizations include: Alexander Lindsay Museum, Contra Costa Central Sanitation District, Our Water Our World, Save Mount Diablo, and numerous others.

Summer Reading Fun Day in Oakley (July 12)
LWVDV joined the Oakley Libraries and “Spidey” for their summer reading fun day.  Yes, even Spider-Man is registered to vote!

Good Trouble Lives On” Vigil and Rally (July 17)
The â€œGood Trouble Lives On” Vigil and Rally at the Concord Immigration Court was a success. League members were present in good numbers and one of our members spoke to the large, diverse group of about 300, emphasizing that it is important to continue John Lewis’s Good Trouble work of protecting and expanding voting rights, especially in these fraught times for democracy and the rule of law.

Elections Ahead…the Challenge, Keeping them Free and Fair!
Celebrating Our Partner, the Contra Costa Elections Department!
The following information comes from this past month’s Elections Newsletter.  As Contra Costa voters, we are fortunate to have an elections office that is a leader in establishing values and standards for free and fair elections.  Congratulations, and thank you to all the county elections staff for your dedication and commitment.

"The Contra Costa County Elections Division has been selected by the nonpartisan U.S. Alliance for Election Excellence as a member of the Pathfinder Cohort in the Centers for Elections Excellence. 75 Election offices in the Pathfinder Cohort including 3 other California offices will focus on researching what it takes to achieve the standards for election excellence and chart pathways for the field. They’ll help deepen our understanding of what resources are required to run excellent elections, how much excellent election administration costs, and how achieving excellence impacts voters. And they’ll be first in line to pursue official recognition through the Alliance certification platform.

"Selection to the Pathfinder Cohort is a continuation of the work the Contra Costa elections team has done over the past 2 years as part of the inaugural cohort of centers. The first cohort drafted the voluntary, nonpartisan Values and Standards for Election Excellence. At a high level, the values lay out a shared vision for how local election offices across the country can aspire to excellence while the standards concretely define what excellent election administration looks like in practice.

"The Contra Costa County Elections Division is thrilled to continue our commitment to excellence through our selection as a Pathfinder!"
