Constitution Day is Every Day!
Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. LWVDV Voter Services co-chairs, Ana and Shawn, met on September 15 with the Los Medanos College Associated Students (LMCAS) for a training session on how to complete a voter registration form. The training was in preparation for tabling at LMC on Constitution Day. The AS students set up a colorful presentation for the Constitution Day celebration and registered eight students to vote.
Constitution Day is celebrated each year at Diablo Valley College (DVC) with activities and tabling in the Commons. The League of Women Voters Diablo Valley (LWVDV) participated in the event by registering voters, and by providing information on the upcoming Special Election, where Prop 50 is on the only measure on the ballot. Also in attendance were the County Elections Office, and Free Legal Immigration Service.
On Monday, September 22, a related Constitution Day program highlighted Social Justice with a panel event in the Diablo Room. DVC faculty spoke of the vital role the Constitution plays in the current social and political context of this moment. Topics discussed included First Amendment rights such as freedom of the press and freedom of speech, threats to the Separation of Powers, psychological impacts of today’s social movements of resistance, and the ongoing crisis of illegal detainments and threats to immigrants. The League once again participated in registering voters, and provided information on how to register by offering an easy-to-use QR code that delivered the individual directly to the Department of Elections website.

Volunteers at DVC included: Ana Pan, Ann Flynn, Elizabeth Howell, Mary Schreiber, Nancy Bocanegra, Tiffany Martin, Glenn Martin, and Yehudit Lieberman. A huge THANK YOU to all the members who participated in making Constitution Day a big success.
Volunteer Opportunities
LWVDV will be at the Lush store in the Broadway Plaza on October 7th to do voter registration. This is part of a new partnership with the League of Women Voters. Members are looking forward to our new adventure with this new partner.
It’s a Howl-La-La-Boo night! If you can help, please email Ana Pan or Shawn Gilbert know at Voter.services [at] lwvdv.org.
