League Leaders and Members:

We are in the midst of the biggest fight for Voting Rights and representative democracy since the passage of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) in 1965. The Supreme Court has now eliminated the final protection with the Calais decision.

To learn more about this issue, see “SCOTUS's Final Blow Dismantling the Voting Rights Acton the LWVUS website. Here is an excerpt from the League’s response:
  • The League has been planning for this outcome and is ready to fight for our multiracial democracy, regardless of what six justices decide.
  • We will continue to fight against racial discrimination in voting and advocate for a fair and transparent redistricting process that produces the most representative maps while considering past systemic racism in every area of life that has affected the ability of Black and other voters of color to elect candidates of choice.
  • We will not stop fighting — in the courts, in the legislatures, and in the streets — for a democracy where every eligible voter has meaningful representation, and every voter’s voice truly counts.

LWVDV members are involved in the fight! Our Unite and Rise team will be planning to participate in events on or near August 8 to commemorate the anniversary of the 1965 Voting Right Act (VRA). Watch for more details in our weekly emails.

At our Annual Membership Meeting on May 30, members voted to adopt our priorities:
  • Promote, Defend and Empower Democracy
  • Youth Engagement
  • Immigration

In June, at the LWVUS Convention, delegates will vote on the new, overarching Priority for the next two years: Defending Democracy Under Siege.

If you want to fight for democracy, you are in the right place!
