Educational Programs

We try to produce at least one program a month, many of which are designed to educate us and the public about important issues of the day. Please let us know if you would be interested in helping us research, present, find speakers, or help organize a program about one of these topics:

  • The importance of school board elections:  Because candidates running for positions on the School Board cross-file (that is, run in both parties), the Primary Election in May is significant for all candidates.  We want voters to understand why school board elections are important for the entire community and urge people to vote in the Primary.  We are planning a public meeting on this topic in March as well as a Speakers Bureau program to be made available to the community from March until the November election.
  • Combating mis- and dis-information:  Today, information is being sent and received at the speed of light. Consuming news, in particular, has become increasingly overwhelming and tricky. Often times, people are unsure if the information they’re getting is 100% accurate. The objective of the educational program is to provide tips and offer resources to help people become more news literate so that they can separate fact from fiction.
  • The abolition of the Electoral College:  Over 50 years ago the LWV, by nationwide voting, decided the Electoral College was a process that disenfranchised the voter. At the 2022 national convention, the LWV US made the abolition of the Electoral College a top priority.  An important first step to achieving this goal is to educate our members and the public that the Electoral College is undemocratic.  The program's objective is to make removal of the Electoral College common knowledge, just as fighting gerrymandering is today, to the citizens of PA.
  • Why civics should be taught in our schools:  The time is always right to equip young people with the tools to take part in our democracy. It is also particularly timely to examine how civics education is prioritized as we approach the 2023 school board elections. Effective civics education yields increased participation in elections, which is the best way to ensure that our elected leadership reflects the values of the population.
