As the U.S. Census nears announcing its final numbers, the League will begin year 2 of working on the People Powered Fair Maps (PPFM) initiative, which works on fair and honest redistricting. The National League of Women Voters gave Rhode Island a grant to create and execute education programs about redistricting.

Currently, the Rhode Island General Assembly sets up a Redistricting Commission through legislation every 10 years. The legislation determines how the members will be chosen as well as states standards for drawing the lines.

We plan to work legislatively to put a ballot measure together that would amend the Rhode Island Constitution and create an independent redistricting commission that does not depend on potentially partisan legislation. Our aim is to spend this year working on putting the redistricting process in the hands of the people. Please join us as we embark on this important work.
