We believe that protecting the right to vote and preserving public health are paramount during these unprecedented times. That is why the League of Women Voters joined a coalition of more than 10 groups to announce our support for the Safe and Healthy Voting in 2020 Act. This bill would make necessary changes to state law for this fall's elections.

The Safe and Healthy Voting in 2020 Act will:

  • Require the Secretary of State to send a mail ballot application to every registered voter allowing them to request a ballot for both the September primary and November general election at once.
  • Require the Board of Elections to set up a series of drop boxes around the state where voters can conveniently deposit their mail ballots 24 hours a day.
  • Waive the requirement for two witnesses or a notary public to sign a voter's mail ballot and allow for automated matching of the voter's signature to ensure security.
  • Require cities and towns to allow in-person early voting including on the weekend before the election.
  • Establish safety protocols for polling places on election day.

Rhode Island needs to make these changes now to be prepared for the elections in September and November. We have seen, in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Georgia and elsewhere what happens when election officials are not prepared.

Please contact your state legislators TODAY and ask them to support the Safe and Healthy Voting in 2020 Act.
