The League of Women Voters of South County is pleased to announce this year's recipients of the 13th annual Susan B. Wilson Civic Education Merit Awards. The team of David Sousa, Kevin Cordeiro, and Mike McGuigan of Trinity Academy for the Performing Arts of Providence, Historical Perspectives Department have earned first place; Melanie Simas, Central Falls High School, Central Falls, Social Studies and Special Education Departments has earned 2nd place; and the team of Mike Calenda and Chris Stanley, Ponaganset High School, North Scituate, Freshman Collaborative course on Humanities and Civics has earned third place.
In recognition of their achievements, an awards ceremony was held via Zoom on Thursday, June 11, 2020. Mr. Thomas Kerr-Vanderslice, former Rhode Island Executive Director of Generation Citizen, was the keynote speaker for this event. Recipients, their families and colleagues were present, as well officers and members of the League of Women Voters.
The League inaugurated this award to honor teachers who have enriched their students' understanding of civic rights and responsibilities; have encouraged their students' civic participation; and have brought context and relevance to crucial events affecting governments within the United States.
