Meeting Agenda
Our February 13 general meeting will be devoted to what the League of Women Voters calls “program planning.” In alternating years, local Leagues discuss state or national public policy positions and recommend priorities for legislative action in the next biennium. At the same time, our League annually reviews and prioritizes its local advocacy positions. This year our focus will be at the state as well as the local level.
We will be reviewing the League of Women Voters of South Carolina’s (LWVSC’s) current policy positions and providing input to the state board, which in turn will review local Leagues’ input and recommend a state program of action that will be discussed and adopted at the LWVSC Convention in May. Local positions and priorities will be adopted at our annual meeting on May 15.
All League members are invited to be part of this grassroots process.
In preparation for the meeting, members are asked to review LWVSC’s 2017-2019 Agenda for Action and LWVHHI-BA’s Public Policy Positions and Priorities. Hard copies will not be available at the meeting.
LWVSC has asked us local Leagues to:
- recommend retaining, dropping, or reconsidering current state positions,
- reaffirm LWVSC's current state advocacy priorities (i.e. redistricting, voter access, ethics reform,
- identify up to three other issues, on which LWVSC and LWVUS have positions, which we would like to see become areas of focus for education and program and resource development at the state level, and
- consider concurring with Florida LWV policy supporting open primaries (i.e. those in which any registered voter may participate in the primary of either party.) Arguments for and against this policy position can be reviewed in the Proposed Concurrence on Open Primaries.
We may also recommend new studies to be undertaken where we think the League can make a unique contribution by adopting a new policy position. New studies require sufficient local interest, committed, knowledgeable local leadership, and a commitment to providing financial resources.
Anyone proposing a change to an existing position or proposing a new study should bring that proposal in writing to the meeting.
