Topic: Celebrating Two Medical Suffragists

Women doctors were a rarity in the 1890s and early 1900s, but Virginia and West Virginia each had a woman doctor who was an active suffragist. 

Dr. Barrett, one of the few licensed women doctors in Virginia, was a humanitarian, philanthropist, sociologist and social reformer, best known for her leadership of the National Florence Crittenton Mission.  She founded the mission in 1895 with Charles Nelson Crittenton out of concern for the welfare of unwed mothers, who had few if any places to turn to for help in those days.

Dr. Jones was active in the West Virginia woman suffrage movement from its inception in the 1890’s. She advocated for admission of women to West Virginia’s colleges and university, and was active in the West Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs, the WCTU, and, later, the League of Women Voters.
