The Virginia General Assembly will be half-way through the 2025 session on Feb. 4th when we meet – a perfect time for us as League members to focus on proposed legislation and lobby our legislators.

Our speakers will focus on key issues for the League: women’s reproductive health, funding our schools and voting rights. Three community members who are active in groups including the League and Our Bodies/Our Choice will update us on these issues and how to be effective in lobbying our local legislators and governor.

Sara Dalton and Pat Hyer will speak about legislation affecting women’s reproductive rights. Gunin Kiran will speak about funding and legislation for our schools. We will also discuss legislation affecting voting rights.

People present will vote to select a book for our League Book Club in September. We will select one of these four proposed books:

  • Democracy in Chains. The Deep History of the Radical Right’s Stealth Plan for America, Nancy MacLean
  • Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism, Anne Applebaum,
  • Liberalism and Its Discontents,  Francis Fukuyama
  • The Kingdom, The Power, and the Glory. American Evangelicals in the Age of Extremism, Tim Alberta

Download Book Choices flyer to read more about each book.

The new Blacksburg Police Department Community Room has free parking in back of the police department building and along Church Street unless otherwise marked. There's also an adjacent public parking garage that charges a fee.
