Our July DEI/SRJ Meeting coincides with the LWV "Good Trouble" event on Thursday, July 17, 4pm - 7pm, at the Ventura County Government Center.  We will not have a Zoom meeting, but we look forward to seeing you in person at the rally.

At our June DEI/SRJ Meeting, the group heard a presentation idea by DEI Chair Laura Hernandez. The purpose of the presentation is to inform League members of the history and state of DEI today and tomorrow. It is based on an article entitled "The Current State of DEI in America: Progress, Challenges, and Future Directions" by Attorney James L. Arrasmith, published February 24, 2025.

Attorney Arrasmith has granted license to DEI Chair Hernandez to use his materials in this presentation. Laura asked the DEI/SRJ committee to critique the presentation and serve as a "focus group" so that this information could be effectively shared with the State LWV and eventually other local leagues. The committee's response was extremely gratifying as each member provided feedback and volunteered to apply their expertise and areas of expertise to finalize the presentation and prepare for release. More to come as we make progress on this project. The teamwork is inspiring. Every measure counts!

The 2025 LWVC Biennial Convention was held June 17th – 22nd Via Zoom and YouTube. Sessions were recorded, and we encourage you to view the following workshops related to SRJ and DEI.

Tuesday, June 17 – 12:00 PM

This session will focus on the critical components of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). By integrating DEI principles, organizations make their programs more inclusive, culturally relevant, and accessible to those who need them the most while deepening their commitment to justice and equality. It is crucial to remain committed to DEI, especially during uncertain times. (Presentation Slides)

We currently live in a political climate where our Constitutional and Civil Rights are at risk. Strengthening our resolve to achieve equity and justice in our criminal legal system is even more important. Local Leagues must continue learning about ways in which we can support the safety and wellbeing of both our communities, especially those most impacted, and the peace officers who serve them. Our workshop seeks to provide data and resources to address many of those needs.  (Presentation Slides | Resources)
