Making Democracy Accessible to the Next Generation
This Spring our focus has been on developing student-led voter registration events. In addition to the 54 students registered in March at Newbury Park HS, we helped 8-10 Oak Park HS students engage with 200 students during 3 lunch periods, playing Civics Education games and registering or pre-registering to vote.
We are in the early stages of creating a "LWVVC Youth Council,” which will be student-driven, focusing on issues they select. The League will act a resource and mentor to help them connect with other community youth groups. Our first community event will be the "Youth Volume Up Expo" on May 17 from 10 am - 3 pm at Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E Burnley St., Camarillo, CA 93010. Come by and see our motivated students in action.
Volunteer training for the fall will begin this summer - more to come next month.
