In a February 6 statement, the League of Women Voters of the United States CEO Celina Stewart wrote that "In the first 17 days of the Trump administration, we’ve witnessed nothing short of the weaponization of government against Americans. The callousness of the most recent actions, including the terrorizing of the immigrant community, shows a blatant disregard for the well-being of the American people."
Today, Connecticut residents have the opportunity to stand up for immigrants and strengthen our state's Trust Act.
Message from the ACLU of Connecticut:
It's been two months since the country inaugurated a new president, and two months since the Connecticut General Assembly opened its 2025 session in Hartford. In that time, we have seen increased fear and divisive rhetoric about immigrants, migrants, refugees, asylees, and others – including unconstitutional executive orders.
The ACLU has challenged these actions in court, including birthright citizenship, and the unlawful detainment of Mr. Mahmoud Khalil.
In Connecticut, the ACLU of Connecticut has been in the Capitol every day, working in coalition with immigration advocacy and direct services organizations all over the state.
The goal: strengthen the Trust Act, Connecticut's state immigration law. State and local law enforcement cannot cooperate with ICE, and we're asking for support on H.B. 7212 to:
- Add an enforcement mechanism.
- Keep ICE out of courthouses.
- Create a state oversight committee.
What can you do: Learn about the bill and submit written or oral testimony. All the information you need is on the ACLU website.
Thank you for standing up for the immigrant community.
