Connecticut is facing a Climate Emergency, a fact that more and more people are waking up to and wanting to take action to address.

What can be done? LWVCT supports an Act to Declare A Climate Emergency in Connecticut. The Environment Committee has until February 25 to raise the bill.

An Act Declaring a Climate Emergency:

  • Requires the legislature to accelerate the reduction of Green House Gas Emissions through legislation, policy, plans, and budgets; and pursue grants and funding consistent with the Governor’s Executive Order on Climate.

  • Allows Connecticut to access additional Emergency Federal Funding.

  • Builds new partnerships and strengthens existing ones among New England States to work together on renewable energy strategies, including battery storage.

  • Supports the inclusion of young people in meetings to gain their perspectives regarding their future in the region.

  • Reaffirms Connecticut’s commitment to racial equity in its climate change mitigation efforts by working with organizations across the state.

  • Requires Connecticut to divest public funds from stocks and securities of companies that derive more than 10% of their revenue from the sale of fossil fuels.

  • Requires Connecticut to work with companies and workers in industries affected by transitioning away from fossil fuels to overcome disruptions and costs.
