This Election Day—November 8, 2022—Connecticut voters have the power to make early voting possible in future elections. This question will be on the ballot:

“Shall the Constitution of the State be amended to permit the General Assembly to provide for early voting?”

The undersigned civil rights and racial justice organizations encourage eligible Connecticut voters to vote “yes” on the Early Voting Ballot Question and clear the way for early, in-person voting to come to the Nutmeg State.

We enthusiastically support this important amendment. Bringing early voting to Connecticut is a practical way to improve access to the democratic process for everyone. It will also reduce the unfair impact of transportation barriers, long lines, and inflexible work schedules, which can make voting on Election Day harder for voters of color.

Right now, Connecticut is one of only four states that do not offer early, in-person voting for all eligible voters; however, if this amendment passes, the legislature will be able to change that. Instead of having to vote during the same hours on the same day, people will be able to vote on days that work for them. And early voting isn’t just about convenience—it's also about racial justice. Studies show that Black and Latino voters face longer lines at the polls. Providing the option to vote early can help shorten lines and decrease wait times for everyone.

Early voting will also help to level the playing field for voters employed in hourly-wage sectors, where workers often have less control over their schedules and may not have access to paid time off.

Connecticut voters have waited long enough. It’s time to join the 46 other states (plus Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa) that already offer early voting. By voting “yes” on the Early Voting Ballot Question, you 1 can help move Connecticut forward—and increase meaningful access to the democratic process for all.
