In 2020, the League of Women Voters will celebrate its 100th anniversary, and LWV Connecticut, along with its 24 local leagues, will mark this special occasion with a fundraising gala on February 22, 2020, at the Stamford Italian Center.

The keynote speaker will be Judge Rosemary E. Collyer, Senior United States District Judge, who was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2002, and who currently presides over the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Court in Washington, D.C.  Judge Collyer has a special relationship with Connecticut: her father, Thomas C. Mayers was mayor of Stamford from 1963-1967.

When Isabella Beecher Hooker and Frances Ellen Burr called for the creation of the Connecticut Woman Suffrage Association (CWSA) at the first Connecticut Women’s Rights convention in 1869, they probably didn’t think beyond the original goal of securing a woman’s right to vote.  And yet, in the years since the ratification of the 19th amendment on August 26, 1920, the organization that grew from that struggle, the League of Women Voters, has been ensuring that eligible citizens across the nation are registered and provided with non-partisan information about the issues and candidates.

In addition to the gala, local leagues across Connecticut will be hosting celebrations throughout the year.  For more details about the gala and other anniversary events please visit the LWVCT website: www.lwvct.org.
