LWVCT TO LEGISLATORS: WE DEMAND TRANSPARENCY

Protecting Democracy in a Time of Crisis

[HAMDEN, CT, March 31, 2020] The League of Women Voters of Connecticut urges the CT House and Senate to ensure legislative transparency while all residents of Connecticut endeavor to live and participate in their government through the COVID-19 pandemic.

LWVCT requests that within the next week, the CT legislature:

  • publicize legislation that both sides agree can go to the consent calendar for a vote when the legislature reopens (whether in-person or virtually);
  • publicize potential plans for a Special Session; and
  • make use of the opening page of cga.ct.gov for daily updates of this type of information.

In a message to Democratic and Republican leaders sent on Monday, the League wrote, “We assume that the business of the legislature is ongoing, although there are no formal committee meetings and no public hearings. The public deserves to know what is happening to proposed legislation and what contingency plans may be in place to deal with this ongoing emergency situation.”

The League of Women Voters of Connecticut is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. It influences public policy through education and advocacy.
